Who owns Oofa Luffa? Is it really a kid-owned small business?
Yes. Oofa Luffa is a kid-owned, girl-owned (female-owned) small business in Blue Grass, Iowa. Alice started it at age 8 and runs it at 10 with help from her family, so every order directly supports a young entrepreneur and a family-run Iowa small business. We are not a warehouse brand or an adult woman-owned corporation with a certification badge. We are a real family business built around a kid founder.
What is a luffa?
A luffa (also spelled loofah or loofa) is a gourd in the cucumber family. Grown, dried, and peeled, the fibrous inside becomes a natural sponge. It does not come from the ocean. Most people are surprised the first time they see one hanging on a vine in a garden.
How do you spell it - luffa, loofah, loofa?
All three refer to the same plant. Luffa is the plant's botanical-style name, and loofah is the common spelling people use for the sponge. We use "luffa" for the plant and our brand story, and "loofah" when shoppers are searching for the sponge product.
What can I use a luffa sponge for?
Use a luffa sponge for washing dishes and scrubbing sinks and tubs, and in the bath or shower as a wash tool with your favorite soap. Keep separate sponges for kitchen and bath so food prep and personal care stay apart. When a sponge is worn out, it can go in the compost.
How long does one last?
With rinsing and drying between uses, a luffa sponge typically lasts 1 to 3 months. Replace it when the fibers start to break down, lose their spring, or develop a smell that washing does not fix. How long yours lasts depends on how often you use it and how fully you let it dry.
How do I clean and care for it?
Rinse after every use, squeeze out water, and hang or stand it where air can reach it. Once a week, wash it (top rack of the dishwasher or in a laundry wash cycle) and air dry only. Full step-by-step tips for bath and kitchen use are on our Care and Use page.
Is it compostable?
Yes. A luffa sponge is plant fiber. When it is worn out it can go in the compost, unlike plastic sponges and poufs that linger in landfills. That is one reason families who want to shop small and cut plastic ask about US-grown luffa.
Where are your luffas grown?
In our family garden in Blue Grass, Iowa. We grow, harvest, peel, and finish them by hand. Most loofahs sold in the US are imported. Ours are not. The 2026 harvest is being processed now for this season's sponge products.

Yes. We ship within the United States. Orders are packed in Blue Grass, Iowa and typically leave within 2 to 3 business days. Shipping is calculated at checkout. Local pickup in the Blue Grass area is available by arrangement after ordering. See our Shipping page for details.
Can I return or exchange something?
No. All sales are final and we do not accept returns or exchanges. Please read sizes, scent descriptions, and seed details carefully before ordering. Full details are on our No Returns page.
Do you sell wholesale?
Yes, we welcome wholesale interest from shops, spas, and soap makers. Current made products are seeds for planting and salt scrubs. Future wholesale interest may include sponges and related items as harvest products are finished. Wholesale is by inquiry only. Visit our Wholesale page to ask about seasonal availability.
When will luffa sponges and soap be available?
